In my work for Business Professionals Network, one of my responsibilities was creation and maintenance of their website. The company's primary vertical focused on Continuing Professional Education via webcast for accountants. The vertical operated under the trade name the Accounting CPE Network or ACPEN.
After a number years with a static HTML site, whose focus was towards partner organization executives, it was decided that the site should be completely overhauled.
The new site would be focused on speaking to endusers of ACPEN courses. In addition, the site would need to be dynamic to make it easier for non-technical staff to maintain and update content on the site. Additionally, as part of a larger push to be more mobile friendly with their products, the site would need to be fully responsive.
I began the project by creating a sitemap to outline content for the new site, and then working with stakeholders to modify and refine. Following agreement on the sitemap, I worked with various employees to create SEO friendly copy for the site. Upon agreement on the content, I created wireframes for major areas of the site.
With approval of the wireframes, I set about building the new site using a Wordpress install as a content management system. This would make it easy for non-technical staff to maintain and update content. This also allowed for various functions to be added easily when desired (such as the slider on the homepage). In addition, I used an existing Wordpress theme which was similar to the wireframing to serve as a base of the design.
At that point, I added custom CSS to create the desired appearance and match the desired color scheme.
